      <image:caption>Earth Day 108 Sun Salutations The yogic exercise of performing sun salutations is so much more than a physical warm up. Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) are a sacred ritual of honoring creation and the creative life force (Prana) that pulses through all living creatures, keeping us alive, healthy and connected. By honoring and connecting to the life giving energy we bring ourselves back to presence and wholeness/oneness. 108 is considered an auspicious number in yogic philosophy. It is said to represent the wholeness of existence, and we see this number over and over in many yogic traditions. Mala Beads (prayer beads) have 108 beads on which to repeat your mantra or prayer or intention. In repeating something 108 times it is seen as a sacred spiritual practice and is often used to commemorate a special occasion or the beginning /ending of a journey, season, phase of life etc.... When you practice 108 Sun Salutations it is a meditative EXPERIENCE, where you may choose to dedicate the practice to a particular purpose that is important to you. This practice is an incredible opportunity for Introspection and learning a thing or two about ourselves (Svadhyaya). You may experience boredom, irritation, discomfort, frustration or even elation, but one of your tasks is to stay present and non attached. The practice becomes very rhythmic, and can be almost hypnotic. This can allow us to get out of our busy mind and into our bodies and the present moment. There will be very little instruction. Copies of the Sun Salutation Sequence will be available for each participant to keep next to their mat should they need the extra guidance. Participants will be encouraged to modify as they wish, and can come and go quietly on their own time. Come for a portion of the practice, or commit to all 108! It's up to you. Some Yoga experience is necessary, and most levels of participant are welcome. However, this practice is not suited for brand new beginners.
